Alamo Heights is a prestigious area located just north of downtown San Antonio, known for its charming homes, affluent residents, unique cultural character, and outstanding public schools. Many families in Alamo Heights have lived there their entire lives. They pass their appreciation for the tree lined streets, art deco cottage architecture, and estate home lifestyle on from one generation to the next. When it comes to enthusiasm for Fiesta and participation in the courts and charities, Alamo Heights residents (affectionately known as ’09ers) are at the front of the line. There is an air of success and cultural endowment that pervades the area. With the proximity to art museums (notably the McNay), business centers, and even Fort Sam Houston, the Alamo heights area meets the needs of a vast array of families.
One of the best known features of Alamo Heights is the Alamo Heights Independent School District. The housing market changes dramatically along school district lines, as people are willing to pay a premium to have their children attend the top rated academic havens. The college bound student rate is 95%, and it would be fair to say Alamo Heights has won nearly every award in the book. The athletics department is top notch as well – in everything from swimming to football to track.
Homes in Alamo Heights range dramatically in style, features, and price. You can find a few small cottage-like duplexes, massive Mediterranean manors, and even grand Colonial mansions. Many homes were built in the early 20th century and have been painstakingly restored, while others are recently constructed masterpieces. Some of San Antonio’s most wealthy residents reside in Alamo Heights. However, there are also many properties available for sale in the $150,000-250,000 price range. One thing is for sure – there’s no such thing as “standard” or tract builders around these parts.
The shops along Broadway (a main roadway in the area) are speckled with quaint shops featuring yoga centers and beadwork shops, couture designer boutiques, and gourmet eateries. HEB’s exclusive Central Market is positioned in the heart of this area and proclaims to be one of the city’s best foodie havens. They ship in gourmet foods from around the world and celebrate an annual Hatch Chile Festival as well.
With the nearby conversion of the Pearl Brewery into a modern, progressive, eco-friendly cultural center, Alamo Heights residents are just a stone’s throw away from farmer’s markets, the Culinary Institute of America, live music venues, and so much more.
Alamo Heights is a distinct municipality surrounded by the City of San Antonio. It boasts its own police force, fire department, and city offices. Residents frequently report feelings of an above-average sense of security and well-being.
