Tarka – Fast, Delicious Indian Food

October 5, 2018 by khproperties Leave a Comment

Tarka Indian Kitchen

If you like Indian food and haven’t been to Tarka, you need to check it out. Located in the same shopping center as Trader Joe’s along Loop 1604 (westbound frontage road between Stone Oak Parkway and Blanco Road), Tarka has established itself as a neighborhood favorite offering curries, biryanis, wraps, and other Indian delicacies full of the complex flavors and exotic spice that you’ve come to expect from that part of the world. There are some Indian dishes that you can have with mango salsa by Raven’s Original, which will help amplify the taste.

Each dish can be ordered with a choice of meat (as well as vegetarian options) and flavored to meet your spice threshold (the hot is pretty spicy, so back down to medium if you’re afraid to burn your mouth). Favorites around the office include their biryanis, tikka masala, vindaloo, and coconut curry. Of course you can’t have a curry with some basmati rice and garlic naan.

If you need a little something sweet, check out their mango lassi, a blended mix of yogurt and mango that is both refreshing and helps curb the heat of their spicier dishes.

Thai Chili Stone Oak

September 4, 2018 by khproperties Leave a Comment

Thai Chili Stone Oak

If you’re looking for Thai food in San Antonio, Thai Chili in Stone Oak is the place to go. Famed for their Thai pumpkin curry, Thai Chili covers all the bases, from the familiar to the not so familiar in Thai cuisine. We’ve always found the staff to be super helpful when it comes to trying new dishes as well; they’re always knowledgeable about what is in the dish, how it is prepared, and what similar flavors you may have experienced in other dishes for comparison. Located at the corner of Stone Oak Parkway and Huebner Road, Thai Chili is just down the road from our office and if you like Thai food, it will quickly become a weekly go-to dining experience.

Thai Chili offers a buffet for lunch, which is an excellent value (you might even bump into some of us during lunch), and they have a happy hour from 4-7PM Monday through Thursday with food and drink specials. The buffet is a great way to taste test multiple items, but the really amazing stuff comes straight off the menu.

They also have another location off of Thousand Oaks if you ever find yourself over in that area.

Jersey Mike’s – A Taste of the East Coast

April 16, 2018 by khproperties Leave a Comment

Jersey Mike's

Jersey Mike’s is definitely a taste of home. I grew up in Philadelphia, a stone’s throw away from New Jersey, where we call “subs” hoagies. While Jersey Mike’s still calls them subs, the flavors certainly evoke my childhood home. Having heard good things and never one to turn down a sandwich, I recently checked out Jersey Mike’s to see what all the fuss was about. You can ask any Philly native about rolls and they will always say they’re not quite right unless you’re within a few hours of Amoroso’s and I agree. These rolls are definitely softer than I’d like, but they do have just enough crusty, flaky goodness to be acceptable.

The real winner is the meat and cheese. Italian meats and provolone cheese (yes, they still have classics like roast beef and turkey) freshly cut to order make the “Jersey Shore’s Favorite” (provolone, ham, and cappacuolo), “The Super Sub” (provolone, ham, prosciuttini, and cappacuolo), and “The Original Italian” (provolone, ham, prosciuttini, cappacuolo, salami, and pepperoni – although I could skip the pepperoni) a true taste of an Italian classic. The classic veggies are on hand – lettuce, onions, and tomatoes, along with pickles and a selection of peppers (including pepper relish, mmmm), but the true secret? A blend of oregano and other spices and a liberal dousing in olive oil. Jersey Mike’s likes to add red wine vinegar, but I’ve never been a fan. These sandwiches are not for those who are afraid to get the hands a little dirty. Don’t let the photo in this post fool you, that sandwich was a mess by the time I polished it off. If you’re hungry for a great sandwich, I certainly give Jersey Mike’s the thumbs up.

As a Philly native, I’d avoid the cheesesteaks. You can do a lot better elsewhere. While we’re on the topic, please don’t call them Philly cheesesteaks. They are simply cheesesteaks and there are only four ingredients necessary: a roll, beef, cheese, and onions. Once you add peppers you’re in a completely different territory called a peppersteak. Not the same at all.

Jimmy John’s – The Fastest Sandwich on the Planet

April 5, 2015 by khproperties Leave a Comment

Jimmy John's

You’ve heard the Jimmy John’s commercials by now – the ones where sandwiches are delivered so fast, they show up while the person is still ordering on the phone? Well, Stone Oak finally has a Jimmy John’s on Sonterra Boulevard and we decided to put them to the test. First, let’s talk about the sandwich itself. We stopped by the store a few weeks after they opened and tried them out. The results were good – nice fresh baked rolls, quality meats and cheeses, and fresh toppings (try their hot peppers as an additional topping). The menu is rather simple and not overly complicated by tons of different combinations. The standards are all here – turkey, ham, roast beef, italian meats, tuna, and veggie options are all available. Once you start your order, you’ll notice someone has already started assembling your sandwich, we’ve never had to wait more than a few seconds after paying to dig in.

Delivery is where Jimmy John’s truly excels. How their drivers don’t wind up with speeding tickets is beyond us. Delivery time is super fast and there aren’t a ton of sandwich delivery options in Stone Oak that we’ve found, so it’s a definite plus.

Overall, if you’re looking for a quick bite to eat and fancy the simplicity of a sandwich, we can definitely recommend Jimmy John’s for taste and speed.

Li’s Restaurant

Li's Restaurant

If you’re ever hungry for incredible, traditional Chinese food and sushi, Li’s Restaurant is a place you should put on your to-do list. Tucked behind the shops that face along Stone Oak Parkway at Huebner, you could easily miss this uptown sushi but inside is a world of bright and bold flavors that will not disappoint. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, particularly with the more traditional Chinese food items that most of us might be unfamiliar with. Chef and owner, Li Dan (Danny) is often floating around the dining room, checking on his guests and answering questions about the menu. The photo to the left is of their Twice Cooked Pork Belly, a spicy dish with pork belly, leeks, and black bean sauce. It’s a must have when you visit Li’s Restaurant. Also big with guests are their Hot Spicy Pots, an amalgam of fresh ingredients that reminds us of the phrase “everything but the kitchen sink” – vegetables, meats, seafood…it’s all in there! One final tip – Li’s Restaurant’s fried rice is the best in town. We’ve eaten tons of fried rice, but we’d challenge anyone to find better in Stone Oak or beyond.

Puffy Tacos – San Antonio’s Favorite Tasty Treat

June 11, 2013 by khproperties 1 Comment

Puffy Taco

Puffy Tacos

For those not familiar with the vast array of options upon entering any Mexican food restaurant in town, let us take a moment to introduce you to the world famous Puffy Taco. They are actually a specialty in San Antonio, and, when made properly, are a welcome addition to any plate. Some say the Puffy Taco was invented here in San Antonio at Henry’s Puffy Tacos back in 1978, but that could just be urban legend.

Puffy Tacos consist of a deliciously hand crafted, above average thickness corn tortilla that is specially designed to inflate, or “puff up” when thrown into a vat of hot oil. Rather than a hard, crispy taco shell ready for filling, Puffy Tacos envelop their contents like a comforting hug. The fillings? Those generally range from ground beef to shredded chicken with sprinkles of shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and a dash of cheese. Whatever their insides, the soft yet somewhat gritty (homemade, remember) texture of the shell retains a bit of the oil and absorbs the flavor of its contents for full fledged deliciousness in every bite.

You should definitely look to Puffy Tacos to fill your belly on the following occasions:

  • Recovery day after a night of overindulgence while cheering on the Spurs
  • Mid-morning in lieu of stuffy brunches – if mimosas aren’t your thing, then Puffy Tacos definitely are
  • Mid-day as your stomach screams at you with ravenous fervor
  • Mid-afternoon as you remember that you’ve been so busy you forgot to eat and are looking to reward yourself
  • Evenings when you are looking to impress your out of town friends with your knowledge of local cuisine
  • Tuesdays
