At a cost of nearly $400 million, Port San Antonio has completed it’s expansion of 1.7 miles of Southwest 36th Street. With the new accessibility comes 400 acres of land open to aerospace development with direct access to the former Kelly Air Force Base runway. With companies like Boeing and Lockheed Martin utilizing the space at the southern end Port San Antonio, this new expansion could lead to some 8,000 new jobs in the area and a major impact for the city’s economy.
Mayor Julián Castro has made a strong effort to address the concerns of companies like Boeing in order to keep them in Port San Antonio, despite a recent downturn in the local aerospace industry. Projects like the expansion at Port San Antonio are all part of the city’s effort to attract high paying industries such as aerospace.
